These are two thumb claws from a Giant Land Tortoise found by PMNS Curator, T. W. Proctor, J.D. in March, 1999. This Giant Land Tortoise is of the Order Testudines and Genus and Species name of Geochelone crassiscutata. On Terry's first dig at the Leisey Shell Pit, with Dr. Robert Sinibaldi and Paleontologist Frank Garcia, Terry recovered and returned with something over 20 pieces of shell from one of these Giant Land Tortoise. However, it did not appear that any of the pieces matched each other. It is understood that these creatures had shells which might be something like 6 feet or more across. Terry plans to try later to put the jigsaw pieces of this shell together if he can start finding matching pieces.
